Vietnam’s first-ever auction of national “.vn” domain names has kicked off with strong demand, as several premium domains sold for more than 20 times their base price on the opening day.
The event marks a major milestone in the country’s push to unlock the commercial value of digital assets and strengthen its growing digital economy.
Strong Bidding Drives Prices Higher
The auction began with a starting price of VNĐ10 million (around $380) per domain. However, competitive bidding quickly pushed prices much higher.
-
The highest winning bid reached VNĐ217 million
-
The lowest successful bid remained at the base price
-
One domain recorded an intense 85 bidding rounds, the highest in the session
Out of 18 domains listed on the first day, 16 were successfully sold, reflecting strong market interest.
Multi-Day Auction Format
The auction is structured across multiple days:
-
March 18–20: First phase of auctions
-
16 domains released each day
-
A total of 50 premium two-character domains being offered
Another phase is planned for June, continuing the rollout of high-value digital assets.
Why These Domains Are So Valuable
According to Vietnam’s internet authorities, two-character “.vn” domains are extremely limited and highly sought after due to their:
-
Short and memorable format
-
Strong branding potential
-
High resale and investment value
Because of their scarcity, these domains are considered premium digital real estate in Vietnam’s online ecosystem.
Categories of Auctioned Domains
The domains offered in the auction fall into several strategic categories:
1. Brand-Oriented Domains
Short names suitable for major companies or brand abbreviations.
2. Industry-Focused Domains
Names that align with specific sectors, enabling niche brand positioning.
3. Trend & Digital Culture Domains
Domains that resonate with modern internet trends and user behavior.
4. Ultra-Short Alphanumeric Domains
Examples like p1.vn, j2.vn, t7.vn, g8.vn are seen as futuristic, tech-friendly, and highly investable assets.
A Step Toward Digital Economy Growth
This auction represents a significant move by Vietnam to commercialize its national domain resources and bring structured value to its digital infrastructure.
By introducing transparent bidding and controlled allocation, the initiative aims to:
-
Encourage digital brand development
-
Attract investors and businesses
-
Strengthen Vietnam’s online identity
-
Support long-term growth of the digital economy

The strong response to the “.vn” domain auction highlights a growing global trend — domains are no longer just web addresses, but valuable strategic assets.
